Overview
Welcome aboard the Zuiderzee, a sailing yacht from 1905. The Zuiderzee sails from Monnickendam, which lies north of Amsterdam.
As soon as the mooring lines are loose, a sea of possibilities lies ahead.... A whole day of sailing, an hour of anchoring and swimming, or make a stopover in one of the port towns. Then you can take a walk around Marken, a group photo in Volendam or go shopping in Hoorn.
The Zuiderzee is kept in operation by a professional and enthusiastic team, Arnold and Pilou. We have a lot of fun sailing, but we like to give the helm off our hands and show our guests the way on deck. Everyone soon feels at home on the Zuiderzee. And that is the intention! We have completely rebuilt the hold in the winter of 2011-2012 and transformed it into a guesthouse with a homely atmosphere in ship style....
From the cozy, open kitchen come the most delicious fragrances ..... How about homemade apple fig pie, hot from the oven, fresh mint tea and delicious hand poured coffee. Or mackerel salad of fish from Monnickendam smokehouse on a crunchy sandwich? The day can of course end with a great extensive BBQ, with homemade salads and perfect meat for everyone..... Or rather an Italian buffet with lasagne, pasta with home made pesto and a caprese..... And for dessert a granita of fresh fruit!
Monnickendam is a great departure port for day trips. With good, free parking and a good bus connection to Amsterdam Central Station, the town is easily accessible from most of the country. Would you rather get off at Edam, Volendam or Marken? You can!
The crew
Arnold and Pilou have been a team for years that likes to give all guests a fantastic day. Above deck with a passion for sailing, fun in manoeuvring and an eye for the comfort and pleasure of the guests. Below deck with lovingly prepared cakes, salads at the BBQ, Tapas and particularly tasty sandwiches.
History
In September 1905, the Luctor et Emergo was launched in Sneek. About thirty years later, the ship was named Zuiderzee by its new owner. For decades she sailed through Dutch waters with cargo. At the time, the ship was carrying wood, sand and peat, among other things. The skipper and his servant loaded the cargo through the wooden hatches in the hold. The same shutters can still be seen from the day room.
For years the Zuiderzee sailed with a side propeller ("Lamme Arm"), as an auxiliary engine (next to the sails) for manoeuvres. For decades the ship carried cargo on the engine, until a lover bought the ship and rigged it again as a sailing ship. With a slightly higher mast and a larger sail area, the ship now sails her old routes with guests.
The colours of the ship are still original, as are the deckhouse and the wooden hatches. All in all, the Zuiderzee is a friendly ship for its guests and crew!
